Why this essay matters
J.C. Howard extends Interpersonal Narrative Accretion through Pre-Uptake Architecture, Antecedent Meaning Load, Institutional Meaning Routing, Narrative Field Saturation, and Pre-Uptake Cascade.
Opening lines
A sentence almost never enters an empty room.
Even when only two people are present, others may already be there in conceptual form: former conversations, remembered injuries, reputations, social categories, assumptions about motives, warnings from third parties, previous experiences, cultural scripts, institutional titles, expectations of temperament, and stories repeated so often that they no longer feel like stories. The words may be new. The interpretive environment is not.
Imagine two people who have known each other for years. One says, “I don't think that is what happened.”
In one relationship, the sentence is received as disagreement. In another, it becomes disrespect. In another, defensiveness. In another, manipulation. In another, courage. The lexical content has barely changed.
