Letters to the Journal

An essay should leave room for an answer. Bring a question, a different interpretation, an original idea, or an experience that helps the inquiry move forward.

Write to J.C. Howard

Send roughly 100–500 words and include the essay’s title or link. Choose how you would like your name to appear.

No journal account is needed. Your email arrives as private correspondence and enters an editorial draft only if it is selected for further consideration.

No reader letters have been published yet. You are invited to begin the conversation.

A conversation, with room to think

Questions, considered disagreement, lived experience, original concepts, and sourced corrections are welcome. Engage the argument; leave out threats, harassment, personal attacks, and promotional spam.

From correspondence to editorial draft

An email remains private correspondence when it arrives. If a response may belong in the journal, it first becomes a private editorial draft. It is never copied directly from the inbox into public view, and it is never published automatically.

A selected response may become a published letter, begin an editorial reply, supply missing context, correct an error, or help an essay develop. When a writer’s original idea materially shapes an article, the journal will preserve attribution and seek permission before publicly crediting the writer or using the contribution.

Your name and optional photo

Choose your real name, a pseudonym, or Anonymous for any public letter. Your email address stays private, but the editor can see it. A photo or details in your writing may identify you even if you choose Anonymous.

You may attach a photo to your email for consideration. There is currently no website upload or automatic photo preparation. You can participate without a photo.

Nothing appears automatically

J.C. Howard must approve every letter, editorial response, follow-up, public name, and attached photo before publication. Selected letters also require your permission for the exact final text, public name, and photo. Private feedback stays private. Any revision to the text, public name, or photo requires renewed permission and approval.

The journal can change

A serious correction or fuller account may lead to a transparent revision of an article. The journal does not treat revision as defeat. It treats a better-supported understanding as part of the public record, while preserving the source and credit for a contribution that helped produce the change.

Reply to the same email exchange, or use the reply link beneath a published conversation. Include the conversation title and link so the exchange can stay together. Every later message needs its own approval; sending or replying to an email never publishes it on the journal.
