Why this essay matters

Christian nationalism and the global struggle over conscience

Opening lines

If Christianity is true, it should not need the state to make unbelief expensive.

A government can pressure people to follow a religion. Their obedience does not prove they believe it. They may simply be afraid of what happens if they refuse.

That is my concern with Christian nationalism: using government power to give Christianity authority over people who do not accept it.

We cannot fight religion with religion. If we oppose Islamic domination but demand Christian domination, we have only changed who gets to rule. The problem remains: people are subject to a faith they did not choose.
