Why this essay matters
How Preparation, Repetition, Framing, and Social Risk Can Convert Familiarity into Authority Across Public Life
Opening lines
A live discussion can be scripted without anyone reading from a page. The script may have been supplied by a political party, an employer, a profession, a family, a classroom, a newsroom, a movement, or an algorithmic platform. Its words may be repeated so often that they no longer feel memorized. They feel obvious.
That is the first power of a script: it conceals its own preparation.
One speaker enters with a vocabulary already accepted by the audience, a beginning everyone recognizes, a villain everyone has rehearsed, a conclusion the room has heard before, and a sentence short enough to survive the edit.
